Write for Humans, Not Just Algorithms
You’ve optimized your content with the right keywords, structured it well, and followed SEO best practices.
Yet, something’s missing—your bounce rate is high, and visitors aren’t converting. Why?
Because Google isn’t your only audience. Humans are.
If you want your content to rank and convert, it needs to engage readers, build trust, and deliver value. In this lesson, we’ll explore how to create content that connects with your audience while satisfying search algorithms.
My Journey from Robotic to Relatable Content
When I first started writing for SEO, my content was optimized to the max—perfect keyword density, meta tags, and backlinks. But despite ranking higher, my conversion rates were dismal.
Visitors clicked, skimmed, and left.
It hit me: I was writing for search engines, not people.
My content lacked personality, emotion, and connection.
So, I shifted my focus.
Instead of obsessing over algorithms, I started writing for the reader first. I shared stories, addressed pain points, and made my content conversational.
The result?
- Lower bounce rates,
- higher engagement,
- and more conversions.
That’s when I realized: Writing for humans is writing for SEO.
How to Write for Humans Without Ignoring SEO
1. Understand Your Audience
To write content that resonates, you need to know who you’re writing for.
• Demographics: Who are they? Age, profession, location, etc.
• Pain Points: What problems are they trying to solve?
• Goals: What do they want to achieve?
Use this understanding to tailor your content. Speak directly to their needs and desires.
2. Write Conversationally
People connect with content that feels personal and approachable.
• Use a friendly tone: Imagine you’re talking to a friend.
• Ask questions: Engage the reader by asking questions they relate to.
• Use simple language: Avoid jargon unless necessary.
Example:
Instead of: “The implementation of SEO strategies can facilitate increased organic traffic.”
Say: “Want more organic traffic? Let’s talk about how SEO can help.”
3. Address the Reader’s Emotions
Humans make decisions based on emotions, then justify them with logic.
• Empathize with their struggles: Show you understand their pain.
• Paint a picture of success: Help them visualize the outcome.
• Use emotional language: Words like “frustrated,” “excited,” or “relieved” create a connection.
4. Tell Stories
Stories captivate and make your content memorable.
• Share your own experiences.
• Include case studies or testimonials.
• Create hypothetical scenarios your audience can relate to.
5. Maintain SEO Best Practices
Writing for humans doesn’t mean ignoring SEO. Balance is key.
• Use keywords naturally: Don’t force them.
• Optimize for readability: Use short sentences, bullet points, and subheadings.
• Include internal and external links: Guide readers to more valuable content.
